The community is invited to the free 5th Annual McKinley Williams-John Easterlying Community Chess Tournament, which is set to take place Saturday, Jan. 30.
The tournament runs from 10:30 a.m. (registration) to 2:30 p.m. (final round) at the Richmond Recreation Complex, 3230 Macdonald Ave.
Limited to the first 40 registered players, the tourney will be in a Quad format, with both rated and non-rated sections.
This event, held by the City of Richmond Recreation Department and West Coast Chess Alliance, is named in honor of McKinley Williams, former President Emeritus of Contra Costa College who was very supportive of chess initiatives in the local area. Williams knew the educational impact of the game on students, said TC Ball aka “The Black Knight” of the West Coast Chess Alliance.
The event is also named in honor of Easterling, who was a mentor to young men and women who wanted to learn chess in Richmond. His legacy lives on in the many chess players who were first exposed to the game by him, TC Ball said.
