Video! 23rd Street business asks for community's help in ID'ing bumbling burglar

The owner of a San Pablo beauty salon is asking for the public’s help in identifying a burglar who stole from the business Sunday morning.

Ana Valadaz, who opened PeinArte Beauty Salon at 1615 23rd St. in 2013, provided us with surveillance video showing a man breaking in through a vent in the ceiling about 6 a.m.

At the start of the video, the burglar can be seen breaking through the vent, using a flashlight as he climbed down into the business. Once inside, it took the burglar a long time to break into the cash register, which indicated to Valadaz that he wasn’t a professional. The thief also looked to have had a frustrating time trying to climb out from where he had entered, but succeeded after multiple attempts.

He made off with an undisclosed amount of cash. Valadaz hopes someone in the community will recognize the suspect from the video and turn him into police.

The video isn’t the only evidence available in this case — the thief apparently left behind his gloves and beanie at the crime scene, which San Pablo police have taken for forensics testing, Valadaz said.

Valadaz said she installed the surveillance system due to the crime problems in the area, but was still stunned by the heist. She wondered if the burglar may have been a former customer, as he appeared to know that he would need a tool to cut through a bar in the ceiling vent.

“He seemed to know that was there,” she said.

Those with information about the case are encouraged to contact the San Pablo Police Department at (510) 215-3130.
