The Richmond Chamber of Commerce is inviting the community to say goodbye to Richmond police Chief Chris Magnus (pictured on left) at a free holiday mixer and farewell party on Dec. 22.

The event will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Hilltop Mechanics Bank, 3170 Hilltop Mall Road, and will include refreshments and “surprise activities.”

Magnus is leaving at the end of the year to take the police chief role in Tucson, Arizona, a larger city posing a new challenge for the chief who has led RPD since 2006.

Magnus has gained local and national acclaim for the work he has done to reduce crime in Richmond and improve relations between law enforcement and residents. He joined RPD following a seven-year stint as chief of the Fargo, North Dakota, police department.

When announcing his decision to leave Richmond last month, Magnus called his departure bittersweet.

“I think most know how close I felt to this department and this community,” he said. “I couldn’t be more proud of where we’re at now and the direction we’re going to continue to head, whether I’m here or not.”

We don’t yet know who will assume the role of interim chief while a lengthy hiring process ensues, but we’ve read reports that it will likely be Assistant Chief Allwyn Brown.
