The woman who was fatally shot as she was riding in a car at a busy Richmond intersection Thursday afternoon has been identified as Ronique Gardner-Williams, 20, of Mill Valley.

Gardner-Williams was riding in the front passenger seat of a vehicle that crashed after being struck by gunfire about 1:40 p.m. in the area of Hilltop Drive and San Pablo Ave., Richmond police Lt. Andre Hill said.

Police responded to initial reports that the incident was a collision, but a traffic officer noticed the car had been hit by bullets.  Gardner-Williams was found in the vehicle with gunshot injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by medical emergency personnel, Hill said.

“The preliminary investigation suggests that the occupant(s) of an unknown vehicle fired at the victim prior to the collision,” Hill said.  “No other occupants inside the victim vehicle were injured.  At this time we have not determined a motive for the shooting nor is there any other suspect information.”

Anyone with information regarding the incident is encouraged to contact Detective Haupt at 510-620-6541.

The killing marked the 19th homicide this year in Richmond.

  1. This is yet another sad tragedy. I know for sure there are camera’s at that particular intersection. Hopefully what is needed to find the suspects is on that camera and hopefully it is a working camera.

  2. I’m just wondering why did they choose this photo of her? Ms. Gardner-Williams was a very beautiful young woman. I do not know her personally, but I’m sure she has a lot of friends & family that love her. Therefore, they didn’t have to use the one presented . My prayers go out to everyone affected by this. Not to put any negativity out there, but moving forward, let’s be more considerate.
