Person shot on westbound I-80 in San Pablo Thursday afternoon

A person was shot and injured while on Interstate Highway 80 in San Pablo about 3:22 p.m. Thursday, the fourth freeway shooting in recent months, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Responding officers located an abandoned black Ford SUV with gunshot and collision damage on the right-hand embankment just before San Pablo Dam Road, CHP said.

Witnesses told investigators that occupants of a sedan that had pulled up next to the Ford on the freeway opened fire, causing the Ford to swerve into a vehicle. The collision did not cause injuries. The driver and passengers in the SUV fled on foot, and officers later discovered one of them, a 30-year-old man, at a Denny’s restaurant on San Pablo Road with a minor gunshot wound to his arm.

He was treated by paramedics and taken to a local hospital. No other occupants were found.

Three previous shootings on I-80 in the East Bay include a family of three shot in Berkeley on Nov. 24, the fatal shooting of San Mateo resident Anthonio Ragland in Pinole, and the injury of a man who was shot in San Pablo on Nov. 2.

The shootings do not appear to be random, officials said.

Witnesses to today’s incident are asked to call the CHP at 1 (800) TELL-CHP (835-5247) or the investigative services unit at (510) 622-4609.
