Respected El Sobrante nurse fatally struck outside Oakland hospital

A highly respected nurse from El Sobrante was fatally struck by a vehicle outside of the Oakland hospital where she had been working a shift last week, according to a report by the Contra Costa Times.

Patricia Alvarez, 66, was hit about 11:50 p.m. Wednesday night as she went to get something from her car during her overnight shift at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland, where she has worked since 1979. She died from her injuries Sunday, just “hours after her newest grandchild was born” and only months before her planned retirement in March, the Times reported.

A hospital spokesperson described Alvarez as “really well-known and well-loved” and as a mentor.

“She touched many lives here at Children’s, both patients and colleagues,” the spokesperson said, adding the hospital was flying its flag at half-staff in her memory.

Alvarez was struck while in a marked crosswalk near the hospital in the 700 block of 52nd Street. A 44-year-old El Cerrito man who was driving an SUV backed his vehicle into her after spotting someone he knows in the area, the Times reported.

The man remained at the scene and was subsequently arrested on suspicion of DUI. He has not yet been identified.
