After being named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week for a second time this season, Richmond native Travis Feeney has benefited from a good amount of media coverage this week along with some optimistic discussion about his NFL draft prospects.

The senior linebacker for the University of Washington “has that fantastic speed,” CBS senior NFL draft analyst Rob Rang told Tacoma’s The News Tribune.

“That’s what makes him really stand out compared to most linebackers available,” Rang said.

Before Feeney’s standout senior season — in which he’s the Pac-12 sacks leader with 6.5 in eight games and second in tackles for losses with 13 — Rang projected the Pinole Valley High alum as a late-round draft pick. His recent play, however, may bump him up to middle rounds, the newspaper reported.

If Feeney is invited to the NFL scouting combine and impresses, “we could be talking about a top-100 type prospect,” Rang said.

“He’s definitely one of the fastest-rising linebackers, in my opinion, among seniors,” the scout said. “The arrow is pointing up for him at this point.”

Also this week, media analyst Bucky Brooks named Feeney to his “Stock Up” list for further exhibiting his promise as a pro.

Scouts love high-motor defenders with a knack for finding the ball and creating disruption at the point of attack,” Brooks wrote. “Feeney flashed his dominant potential in an 11-tackle performance that included 4.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, two forced fumbles and a pass breakup. The sensational effort sparked the Huskies’ defense in a 49-3 win over Arizona that has Pac-12 opponents fretting over the team’s resurgence under Chris Petersen.”

Meanwhile, The Seattle Times wrote a more personal story about Feeney’s infectious smile, while also calling him the catalyst for Washington’s “stout defense.”
