Richmond council to celebrate longtime community advocate's 100th birthday

Carnell Rogers Heard (pictured) has been serving Richmond community organizations since the end of World War II — and still she marches on.

Heard is set to be honored at Richmond City Council Tuesday after turning 100 years old on Nov. 25.

She was born in 1915 near Luaderdale City, Miss. and moved to Richmond in 1947. Heard has dedicated much of her life to community service. She has been a lifetime member of the NAACP and is also a member of the National Women’s Missionary Council and Coronado Neighborhood Council. She has also been a member of Davis Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church for 68 years, where she has served as a stewardess since 1951, according to city documents.
