Charitable resident aims to feed 200 local families in North Richmond on turkey day

One local resident’s hunger to help others is leading to a large, free Thanksgiving feast on Thursday.

At the senior center at 515 Silver Ave. in North Richmond Thursday, the first 200 families who show up will be provided a healthy home-cooked meal, drinks and desserts for free. Some meals will be delivered to homebound residents.

Meals will be served starting at 1:30 p.m., and all local families are invited.

The event is the brainchild of a single person, Shawnte’e  Cotright. She said she always wanted to volunteer at shelters and soup kitchens during the holidays. Instead, she became inspired to hold her own event in North Richmond.

After consulting with her foster sister, an expert in meal services, Cotright identified the venue for her charity dinner, budgeted the cost of meals and solicited family and friends for donations.

“To my surprise, nearly all of the people I asked were very happy to donate,” Cotright said. “These reactions inspired me and let me know that I was doing what I was suppose to do. Thanks to my community of family and friends we are going to be celebrating a five-star Thanksgiving dinner with new family and friends.”

Cotright says it feels really good to do good.

“I have never given anything of this magnitude before,” she said. “I love it and will be looking forward to next year’s event.”

Cotright was so inspired by the experience that she is also planning a similar Christmas party/dinner in 2016.
