Richmond officials launch Thanksgiving Day fire prevention effort after spike in blazes last year

Richmond Fire Department offers tips for approaching fire season

The Richmond Fire Prevention Services Division is disseminating information warning residents about Thanksgiving Day fires.

Last year, the average number of fires in residential buildings on Thanksgiving Day more than doubled last year’s daily average, fire officials said.

Fires in residential buildings most frequently occur from noon to 3 p.m., during meal prep. The rest of the year, such fires usually occurs between 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

To prevent a fire, officials advise residents to “stand by your pan” to ensure safe cooking, and to only use turkey fryers indoors.
