Kennedy High alum Dr. Ramona Bishop named educator of year in Solano County

Dr. Ramona Bishop, the Kennedy High alum who currently serves as superintendent of the Vallejo Unified School District, was named Tuesday as an Educator of the Year by prominent African American organizations in Solano County.

Bishop was honored during the Solano County Black Professionals & Business’ Black & White mixer in Fairfield. The event was hosted by the Solano County Black Chamber of Commerce, Solano Black Lawyers Association and Solano Realtist Association.

Bishop has been credited with helping raise student academic achievement and foster a safe learning environment at the Vallejo school district, which she’s headed since 2011. In July, she was invited to speak at the White House Rethink School Discipline Conference.

She has performed nearly every job assumed by educators — she’s been a teacher, principal, director, assistant superintendent and superintendent of several urban school districts. She also serves on numerous state and local boards and has won multiple awards over the years. Both this year and last, she won the California School Board Association’s Golden Bell Award for Full Service Community Schools.

Prior to the Vallejo school district, she served as superintendent of the Twin Rivers Unified School District. Aside from graduating from Kennedy High, she received her undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley, Master’s at Cal State-Hayward and doctorate in educational administration from the University of Pacific.

  1. UMMM…. How can that be possible? Educator of the year????? Students are so scared they cannot learn, teachers can’t teach because of the fighting and violence that happens on campus and it just gets ignored. Hey DR. Bishop why don’t you do your job and find a solution. DO SOMETHING PROTECT THE STUDENTS PROTECT THE TEACHERS!!!!! Dr. Bishop how can you even think about accepting the honor and award of Educator of the Year when you are miserably FAILING so many kids. SMH This is ridiculous.

  2. This article claims that Bishop was the superintendent of the Twin Rivers USD. This is incorrect. Whoever wrote this article clearly didn’t do their research. Just a reminder to take everything you hear with a grain of salt.

  3. It is also interesting that you would use a photo of her from long ago, behind an impressive podium at a different gathering, rather than one at the actual gathering on a makeshift “stage” in a car dealership.
