5-year-old injured in Richmond shooting Tuesday night

A man was critically injured and a 5-year-old boy seriously hurt after suspects fired into their vehicle in Richmond Tuesday night, police said.

Police responded to the 200 block of South 37th Street about 7:45 p.m. on reports of a shooting, Richmond police Lt. Andre Hill said. Officers soon learned the adult victim had driven himself and his 5-year-old passenger to the hospital as both were suffering from gunshot wounds.

The man, reportedly in his 30s, was struck in the torso and critically injured, while the boy suffered a less serious gunshot wound that is not life threatening, Hill said.

Officers learned that a vehicle described as a white, four-door Pontiac had pulled alongside the victim’s vehicle and at least one person opened fire.

The boy’s relationship to the driver was not immediately known, Hill said.

“It’s always a tragedy when a young kid like that is caught in a situation in which shots are being fired,” Hill said.

No arrests have been made.
