An inspiring El Cerrito student is using creativity and ingenuity in order to get his homeless father back on his feet.
Junior Jaylen Phelps, a Richmond resident and star player on the El Cerrito High football team, has launched an online fundraiser where he is selling t-shirts he designed under the label “Fortunate.”
He wants to use the proceeds from the shirt sales to get his father help.
“I’m asking for any one who can help me to help me,” Phelps said on the gofundme.com account.
Phelps is an inspiring young man who refuses to let the hand he’s been dealt get in the way of his dreams.
“As a kid I didn’t have anyone to look up to,” he said in a Tweet back in June. “So I gotta create my own path and make my own LEGACY. I’m go be the one to look up to. Promise.”

Winfrey says Phelps is a smart young man who is on track to graduate from El Cerrito High a year early.
“His father was also a high school football star at El Cerrito and something happened to him,” she said. “He is now homeless and living in agony on the streets of Richmond. Jaylen took this tragedy and pain, and decided to launch a t shirt line to support his father. His mother has done an amazing job raising him. This young man is truly awesome. Thanks in advance for the support.”
