Driver fleeing police causes damaging crash in residential area of Richmond

A driver who crashed while fleeing police Thursday morning caused a massive amount of damage to other cars and property at 29th Street and McBryde Avenue in Richmond, fire officials and witnesses said.

Community advocate Mike Raccoon Eyes Kinney alerted us to the crash, saying it occurred about 9:40 a.m. and demolished at least three cars. Kinney was at the scene and sent us the photos and video included in this story.

Richmond fire Battalion Chief Oscar Jones said the crash occurred when a male driver being chased by San Pablo police crashed into about seven vehicles and property in the residential neighborhood. The suspect, identified only as a Richmond man, was driving the grey car that is seen above photo with severe front-end damage. He fled police during a traffic stop on Vale Road.

“He went through a residential community and destroyed a lot of things,” Jones said, as evidenced in the photos.

Once at the intersection of McBryde and 29th, the driver, who police say was alone in the vehicle, struck a vehicle driven by a female victim at the intersection. He then hit a fence and parked vehicles before coming to a stop.

The driver had to be extracted from the vehicle and was subsequently transported to John Muir Medical Center in critical condition, Jones said. The female driver was also transported to a hospital for evaluation, but was not seriously injured, Jones said. No one else was injured.
