Firefighters keep garage blaze from spreading to main home on 22nd Street

A fire in a detached garage in Richmond’s Belding Woods neighborhood Thursday threatened the main house, but firefighters had it under control before it could spread, a fire captain said.

We received several reports from residents about the blaze at an abandoned property at 653 22nd St., including pictures and a brief video of the firefight from community advocate Mike “Raccoon Eyes” Kinney.

Fire Capt. Rico Rincon confirmed the fire was reported at 5:53 p.m. and added that no one was injured.

“A first alarm was sent initially,” Rincon said. “They called a second alarm when it looked like the main house could be exposed to the flames.”

The second alarm was canceled after the fire crew gained the upper hand on the blaze, Rincon added. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

Kinney, a longtime resident, noted the home was built in 1923, which this Trulia report confirms.

In the video, Kinney can be heard commending the firefighters and saying about the property, “This thing has been waiting to happen for a while.”
