Local community groups seeking donations to create homeless health packets

Community advocates are calling on local residents to help create health packs for the homeless.

This month, the folks behind 510 Hikers and Soulful Softball Sunday are pooling their resources and influence in order to assemble as many health packets (like the one pictures above) as possible.

The groups have started a gofundme.com page in order to raise funds with the goal of providing as many as 150 homeless individuals in Richmond and Oakland with health packets.

“There is a growing need on the streets these days, rising rent costs and lack of work for some have families having to decide between hotel stays hungry or sleeping in the car with food in their stomach. Not both,” according to a statement posted on the gofundme.com page.

510 Hikers has been holding monthly charity events for more than a year, giving thousands of meals, shoes, clothes and health packets away. The group has teamed with the highly successful Soulful Softball Sunday that began at Nichol Park this past summer.

Advocate Rodney Alamo Brown believes this coalition should open dialogue for other cities in the Bay Area to link together for greater causes.

The community can contribute in dollars or items. Items can be donated to Praise Fellowship Bible Church, 5221 Central Ave. Suite 100 Richmond, on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

Donations can also be made to Independent Holiness Community Church, 1605 Potrero Ave. in Richmond from Wednesdays through Fridays from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Items include deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, cough drops, soap, lotion and crackers.
