by Contra Costa County Supervisor John Gioia,
I’m excited to celebrate Head Start’s 50th anniversary in Contra Costa County! I invite you to join us at our award-winning George Miller III Childcare Center in Richmond to honor this successful program that’s helped thousands of families countywide.
Over the past 50 years, more than 32 million children nationwide have benefited from Head Start’s comprehensive preschool services. Head Start students have gone on to become successful teachers, business people, doctors, lawyers, mayors, members of Congress, athletes, musicians, poets and parents.
Contra Costa County serves more than 2,000 children at its 15 Head Start and partner sites.
Started in 1965 as part of President Lyndon Johnson’s “War on Poverty,” Head Start is critically important in helping all families access early learning that benefits a child’s educational, social, emotional, and physical health.
As a strong advocate for early childhood learning, I’ve consistently supported Head Start and advocated for continued federal funding for this life-changing program.
