The bicyclist who was struck and killed by a Union Pacific freight train in Richmond Saturday afternoon has been identified by the Contra Costa County coroner’s office as 53-year-old Mark Guillory.
Guillory, of Richmond, was cycling across the railroad tracks when an eastbound Union Pacific freight train struck him at about 1:50 p.m. at the Cutting Boulevard grade crossing, rail company spokesperson Francisco Castillo Jr. said.
Guillory apparently went around the crossing gates while attempting to beat the train, which had been traveling at 38 mph, Castillo said. He said it takes about a mile before a train can stop and that by the time the crew sees a person or object on the track, it is often too late. No one on the train was injured.
