Richmond taking stand against workplace bullies

Workplace bullies are bad for our health and frankly they make life miserable, and so the city of Richmond is officially telling them to cut it out.

A proclamation set for Tuesday night’s Richmond City Council meeting will designate Oct. 18-24 as “Freedom from Workplace Bullies Week in Richmond, Calif.”

The proclamation by Mayor Tom Butt confirms a lot of what we already know about the consequences of workplace abuse. An abusive work-environment causes stress that can have serious health consequences, among other personal complications. It is also harmful to employers as it leads to reduced productivity, absenteeism and turnover.

“The well-being of citizens, employees and employers depends upon the existence of healthy and productive employees working in safe work environments,” city documents stated.

The city hopes all employers and workers will observe Freedom from Workplace Bullies Week.
