At last! Richmond Swim Center grand opening set for Oct. 24

The Richmond Swim Center, which has been closed for significant renovation since April of last year, is set to have a grand opening event to showcase the new facility on Oct. 24, according to the city.

The grand opening is set to run from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the swim center next to Kennedy High, 4300 Cutting Blvd. The event is solely to show off the new pool to community residents, so no swimming will be allowed. Refreshments and desserts will be served.

The advertisement also requests anyone seeking more information about the event to contact Richmond Recreation at (510) 620-6793.

richmondswimcenter.10-6For months, residents have been inquiring about the status of the pool’s $7.6 million renovation. Last month, we caught up with Ranjana Maharaj, the city’s community services administrative manager, who said a late October opening was likely.

Renovations included significant roof work, improved lighting, a new air conditioning system as well reconfiguration of the existing swimming pool and a new deck. The former swim center, which was constructed in the early 1990s, suffered from moisture damage related to an imbalance in the water temperature and the air conditioning system.During the closure, most swim programs were relocated to the Richmond Plunge.

“I know the Richmond residents will be as happy and excited as I was when they finally get to use it,” Maharaj has said.
