Several readers have asked us to inquire about the status of the Richmond Swim Center, particularly after we reported in June that its $7.6 million renovation was nearly complete.
On Tuesday, we received word from city officials that the public pool at the Kennedy High campus will likely open in late October. While construction has completed, the city has a few more boxes to check off before opening the pool to the public, including training its aquatic staff.
“Our Public Works Department is currently working on some punch list items at the Richmond Swim Center and I believe that may take about two weeks or so,” said Ranjana Maharaj, the city’s community services administrative manager.
Staff training will take another two weeks, he added.
“Late October seems like a more feasible operational time,” Maharaj said. “This will give us enough time to be prepared to operate the pool, keeping in mind that safety is our number one priority.”
Maharaj said the public won’t be disappointed. He called the improved facility “impressive.”
The pool has been closed since April of last year. Renovations included significant roof work, improved lighting, a new air conditioning system as well reconfiguration of the existing swimming pool and a new deck.
The former swim center, which was constructed in the early 1990s, suffered from moisture damage related to an imbalance in the water temperature and the air conditioning system.
During the closure, most swim programs were relocated to the Richmond Plunge.
“We are all very excited about the new pool and would love to open it as quickly as possible,” Maharaj said. “I know the Richmond residents will be as happy and excited as I was when they finally get to use it.”
