UPDATE from San Pablo police: The road will remain closed for repair work until approximately 10 p.m. this evening, although businesses and pedestrian traffic has resumed.

A utility gas leak Thursday afternoon closed Broadway Avenue from Rumrill Boulevard to El Portal Drive, which is just west of Contra Costa College.

The San Pablo Police Department reported the leak just before 2 p.m. Businesses and residents in the area were evacuated, the police department said. Contra Costa Fire and Pacific Gas & Electric Co. teams were sent to the scene to address the leak. Repairs were estimated to take up to two and a half hours, the city said.
