Nothing lasts forever, but the fighting spirit of Rosie the Riveter clearly lives on.
One month after a Guinness World Record was set in Richmond when 1,084 girls and women dressed as the iconic WWII poster girl gathered in a Richmond park — marking the largest ever gathering of Rosie lookalikes — the Midwestern groups that formerly held the record have vowed to reclaim the title.
Guinness World Records recently confirmed Richmond’s record-setting feat, which broke the record set in March of last year when 776 Rosies met at the Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti, MI. Women of all ages donned coveralls, work boots and spotted bandanas for the Rosie Rally in Richmond, which took place at The Rosie the Riveter Memorial in Marina Bay Park.
Folks in Michigan are apparently determined to win back the world record, according to hometownlife.com, a news organization serving Detroit’s suburbs.
“Inspired and challenged by the phenomenal result, the organizations of Willow Run are coming together to reclaim the world record and prove that Michigan is the physical and symbolic home of the original Rosie the Riveter,” the newspaper reported.
Fighting words, for sure. The attempt to reclaim the Guinness World Record from Richmond will occur on Saturday, Oct. 24, the newspaper reported. It accompanies an effort to save a portion of the original Willow Run Bomber Plant, it added.
Of course, the competition is all in good fun and meant solely to keep the memories of Rosie the Riveter and the contributions of women on the WWII homefront fresh.
“We are humbled yet thrilled that so many people in California came out to honor the women of WWII by breaking our world record,” said Kevin Walsh, executive director of the Yankee Air Museum, according to homefrontnews.com. “Now we ask the women of Michigan to take pride in this historic local treasure and bring the record back home to Rosie’s factory, because victory started here.”
