Richmond residents who are anticipating the single-day rebuild of John F. Kennedy Park next month had even more reason to be excited Wednesday after NBC Bay Area aired a story about the community-led effort.
More than 400 volunteers are expected to head out to JFK Park at Cutting Boulevard and South 41st Street from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 24 to help rebuild the underutilized park in just one day.
The City of Richmond and The Trust for Public Land have partnered to design a modernization of the 7-acre park built in 1968. On build-day on Oct. 24, which doubles as national Make a Difference Day, hundreds of volunteers will band together to make the modernization plans a reality. They will help build a play structure, plant trees, paint a mural, snap photographs and much more.
“Whatever your age or fitness level, we have a job for you,” organizers said.
The NBC Bay Area report offered more insight into some of the improvements being planned:
“The work will add a children’s play area complete with swings, a climbing wall and a skate park,” the report stated. “A small gazebo will be whipped-into a community gathering area, with barbecues, picnic tables and an area for an outdoor classes. The shed will be rebuilt. The gazebo will get an actual roof.”
A victory garden and a new fitness trail were also mentioned, along with Bay-friendly landscaping and a new game court.
Funds are still being raised to redo the basketball courts, but if the money doesn’t come through before build day organizers plan to hang a banner that says “coming soon,” according to the NBC Bay Area report.
In July, organizers held a public Design Festival to exhibit park ideas and solicit support. In May, park renovations got a head start when TLC for Kids Sports and OC Jones and Sons volunteered to renovate the ballfield.
