A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of throwing a “baseball-sized” rock at a police patrol car just north of the El Cerrito Police Department on San Pablo Avenue Thursday.
Frank Cook Sanders IV, identified as being from both Richmond and Hercules, was booked into the Contra Costa County Detention Facility on charges of assault on an officer, vandalism and a probation violation, police said.
The incident unfolded about 6:40 p.m. when an officer drove northbound from the El Cerrito Police Department. As he neared Big 5 Sporting Goods, which is on the same block as the police department, a large rock struck the windshield of his patrol car, police said.
“The impact of the rock caused a spider-web crack directly in front of the steering wheel,” the department said.
The officer was not injured. He exited the car and saw the suspect run down the driveway of the Big 5 Sporting Goods store. The suspect temporarily got away, but officers reviewed surveillance footage and were able to identify him as Sanders, police said.
A search was conducted and Sanders was located at a BART station and arrested. A motive for the crime wasn’t immediately clear.
