A small fire at Richmond police headquarters Sunday morning caused significant water and smoke damage to the detective bureau’s second-floor conference room, according to police.

The blaze, however, was contained within the second floor area and the building will continue to be operational while the room undergoes repairs, police said.

The fire at 1701 Regatta Blvd. reportedly occurred about 8:30 a.m. A short in the electrical system caused the blaze, police said, and Chief Chris Magnus Tweeted that a portable fan was responsible.

The blaze was doused by automatically activated sprinklers and firefighters, police Sgt. Phil Sanchez told Bay City News.

Detectives will temporarily relocate to the patrol officers briefing room in the same building, Sanchez said. Repairs will take between four and six weeks, Magnus said.

Police have been leasing the building for their headquarters since 2006, Sanchez told BCN.
