The heat isn’t the only thing that will put these competitors in check.

This Saturday, residents are encouraged to attend and compete in the “Hot August Night Community Chess Tournament” at the Richmond Recreation Department, 3230 Macdonald Ave.

The free quad-format tournament includes both rated and non-rated sections, according to West Coast Chess Alliance, the local group sponsoring the event along with the City of Richmond.
