UC Berkeley police chief ID'd as official who lost badge, loaded gun in Richmond auto burglary

The law enforcement official whose badge, loaded gun and other items were stolen in an auto burglary at Point Isabel Regional Shoreline in Richmond Friday morning has been identified as UC Berkeley police Chief Margo Bennett, who had reportedly been jogging at the time of the break-in.

UC Berkeley police issued a statement Saturday saying Bennett was the victim of an auto burglary there. The theft was reported at 8:17 a.m. in the parking lot near the Mudpuppies dog grooming business at 1 Isabel St., according to park officials. When Bennett returned from her jog, she found a rear window of her unmarked police car smashed, police said.

The department-issued badge, loaded gun and laptop were stolen from the car, along with a diamond ring, iPad, cellphone and her police identification, according to East Bay Regional Park police.

Anyone with information about Friday’s burglary is asked to contact East Bay Regional Park District police dispatch at (510) 881-1833.
