A 23-year-old man who was critically injured in a shooting in Richmond Sunday night has died, according to the county coroner.
The victim was identified as Kenji Jones, 23, of Richmond.
Jones was found with a gunshot wound to his head in the 900 block of 8th Street about 9:30 p.m., when the Shotspotter activation system alerted police to about nine gunshots in the area.
He was transported to Kaiser, then airlifted to John Muir Medical Center in critical condition and placed on life support, police Lt. Andre Hill said.
He has since passed away.
No arrests have been reported in connection with the shooting. About an hour before Jones was shot, two people were injured in a shooting several blocks away.
About 8:35 p.m., police working on 15th Street heard a volley of gunfire and rushed to the 300 block of Marina Way South to find a person with a gunshot wound to the leg. The person was not cooperative with police, refused to wait for emergency medical personnel and was transported by his mother to a near by hospital, Hill said. A second victim later showed up at the hospital with a gunshot wound to his hand.
It is not known if the shooting were related. The motives for the shootings are also unknown, and no arrests have been announced.
Police Capt. Mark Gagan says Jones was not believed to be in a gang, nor was he considered an at-risk youth.
His death marked the 11th homicide in Richmond this year, equaling the total number of homicides for all of last year, which police say was a 40-year low.
