A 19-year-old Vallejo man was fatally shot early Friday in Richmond, police said.

The Richmond Police Department’s ShotSpotter gunshot detection system recorded nine shots fired in the area of S. 47th Street and Cypress Avenue just after 1 a.m., police Lt. Andre Hill said. Responding officers located Donya Blanton, 19, suffering from a gunshot wound to his mid-torso area in the parking lot of the Booker T. Anderson Community Center at 960 S.47th St.

Banton was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, and was pronounced dead there about 3 a.m, Hill said.

The incident marked the city’s 12th homicide this year. A motive for the killing is under investigation, and there is no suspect information at this time, Hill said.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact Detective Eric Haupt at 510-620-6541.
