With Aug. 7 marking 100 years since the city of Richmond was celebrated at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition (PPIE) of 1915, the Richmond Museum of History has become the place to be this summer.
On July 11, the museum at 400 Nevin Ave. in Richmond launched a mini-exhibit celebrating the centennial of the PPIE, which was the world’s fair held in San Francisco. On Aug. 7, 1915, PPIE commemorated the 10th anniversary of Richmond’s incorporation by holding “Richmond Day” at the fair.
The mini-exhibit at the Richmond Museum of History, which runs through December, features artifacts from the museum’s permanent collection including postcards, souvenir books, ribbons and textiles. There will also be a medal made by Shreve & Company commemorating “Richmond Day,” the museum says. The exhibit is included with the museum’s general admission of $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and students (children under 12 are free).
Then on Saturday, Aug. 8, the museum will simultaneously celebrate Richmond’s birthday and involvement in PPIE with a public program featuring a performance by Contra Costa Chorale as well as a lecture by author Laura Ackley.
The Contra Costa Chorale will perform “1915 the Time, Frisco the Place” by Jack Lipton and the State Song “I love you California,” with music by A.F. Frankenstein and words by F.B. Silverwood.
Ackley’s award-winning book, San Francisco’s Jewel City: The Panama Pacific International Exposition of 1915 will be available for purchase at the event.
Like the ongoing exhibit, the Aug. 7 program is included with general admission.
