A California Highway Patrol officer was airlifted to a hospital after his vehicle was struck at the scene of an earlier collision on Interstate Highway 580 in Richmond, according to Bay City News.
The first crash occurred at 6:52 p.m., a two-car collision in the westbound lanes just west of Marina Bay Parkway, CHP said.
The accident involving the officer occurred at 7:47 p.m., after the officer returned to his car after investigating the initial crash. His patrol car was struck from behind as it was backing up by another vehicle, causing the officer to suffer a head injury. He was transported by helicopter in stable condition, BCN reported.
The incident impacted both directions on the highway, with the eastbound lanes opening up first at 8:23 p.m.
