Former A's pitcher lends hand as commissioner of new Soulful Softball Sundays in Richmond

A community summer softball season starting this Sunday in Richmond is gaining much interest from both residents and the media, and has also signed on former Oakland A’s pitcher Mike Norris as commissioner.

Community members, both men and women, are invited to join the inaugural season of Soulful Softball Sundays, which aims to unite the community in a positive, fun and active way, according to community advocate Rodney Alamo Brown.

Those interested are asked to attend a”draft” at 2 p.m. Sunday at Nichols Park, Brown said. Thus far, he said, more than 40 people have committed to playing.

Participants must bring their own bats and gloves, and are also encouraged to bring soul food dishes to share, Brown said. Balls and umpires will be provided.

Drugs and alcohol are prohibited at these family events. The Richmond Police Department will have a presence at games to ensure safety, Brown added. Soulful Softball Sunday’s is presented by The Sons of Issachar.

“It’s a beautiful thing when the community can come together and celebrate love and unity,” Brown said.
