Community chips in to send 10 North Richmond youth to rodeo

Local community members’ charitable donations sent 10 North Richmond youth to the rodeo on Sunday.

Community advocates Rodney Alamo Brown, Andre Bean, Andreena Richardson and The Sons of Issachar raised funds to offer youth from low-income families a unique summer experience. They attended the Bill Pickett Rodeo in Hayward, an experience Brown called “amazing.” Terri James also contributed as a chaperone.

“The young men were well behaved and respectable,” Brown said, adding the thousands of spectators at the event had a “terrific day filled with laughter and joy.”

Brown and fellow community advocates have been fundraising almost daily to bring unique activities to low-income local youth. Next week, Brown says fundraising efforts will send youth from St. John’s Apartments to the Oakland A’s game. Last month, their efforts sent youth from the Pullman Point Apartments and Kennedy Manor to an A’s game.

We must employ many options to get our youth to venture beyond the five block radius and see the world,” Brown said. “It’s a beautiful thing when you see kids smile at the smallest things in life.”
