Michael Jeffries, former singer of the popular R&B group Tower of Power, will join 6-piece New Orleans-style funk and R&B group BeauFunk in headlining the first concert of the 2015 Music on the Main series in downtown Richmond, it was announced Wednesday.
The concert will take place on July 22 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the lot next to the BART parking garage at Marina Way and Macdonald Avenue. The whole community is invited to attend the family event presented by the nonprofit Richmond Main Street Initiative, which is spearheading a City Council-approved effort to revitalize downtown.
Jeffries is a Memphis native who was lead vocalist for Tower of Power from 1978 to the mid-1980s. In the following YouTube video, check out his performance with BeauFunk at last year’s San Jose Jazz Summer Fest. Before BeauFunk takes the stage, one of Richmond’s local R&B groups, The Reed Fromer Band, will perform. The band is a regular at The Baltic in Point Richmond and will play R&B and soul music favorites by Earth Wind & Fire, The Isley Brothers, and others.
The second free concert of the Music on the Main series is set to occur Aug. 26 at the same location and time. In that show, one of the Bay Area’s premiere homegrown performers, Andre Thierry, will bring folks to the dance floor with his world-renowned accordion-playing skills and smooth vocals. Also performing on Aug. 26 are the Caribbean Allstars, who will bring reggae, calypso, and African highlife music to downtown.
Both concerts will feature family-friendly activities, Zumba fitness breaks, beer and food vendors, drawing prizes, and a special water saving comedy and juggling presentation by EBMUD’s EarthCapades!
Music on the Main is sponsored by the City of Richmond, Chevron, Sims Metal, and the YMCA East Bay. Additional support for Music on the Main comes from the Downtown Richmond Property Based Business Improvement District (DRPBID).
