Some WCCUSD parents to get 'extra credit' for graduating from Parent University program

Nearly 300 parents at nine West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD) schools are more familiar with the local education system — and thus more able to connect their children to opportunities — after completing a seven-week  “extra credit” course called Parent University, the district said.

At a reception before the Board of Education meeting on Wednesday, more than 150 of those graduates will be recognized for completing the two-hour per week course, the school district said Monday. The meeting is set to begin at 6 p.m. at DeJean Middle School, 3400 Macdonald Ave.

Parent University teaches parents how to navigate the school system and make informed decisions about their child’s education. The program, implemented at Dover, Bayview, DeAnza, Lake, Montalvin, Nystrom, Riverside, Verde, and Wilson, was designed to foster parent engagement and create “active parent leaders,” the district said.

“Parents learn about parental involvement, preparing for a lifetime of learning, understanding the education system, becoming effective communicators and how to take action for a quality education,” the district’s statement said.

“We commend them for their dedication and commitment,” the statement added.
