A 24-year-old man was fatally shot on McBryde Avenue in Richmond Monday afternoon and a suspect is in custody, police said Tuesday.

After responding to calls from residents about a shooting about 3:30 p.m., officers found Robert Fitch, a Richmond resident, suffering from a gunshot wound in front of a home in the 2600 block of McBryde, police spokesperson Sgt. Nicole Abetkov said.

Fitch was taken to a local trauma center, where he died, Abetkov said.

Police located a shooting suspect only a few blocks away after receiving descriptions from witnesses. That suspect, 54-year-old Byron Fairbanks, was brought to police headquarters for follow-up interviews and was subsequently arrested on the murder charge.

Police have not stated a motive in the case.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact Det. L. Caston at (510) 620-6622.
