Community members have played a central role in coming up with ideas for the Unity Park project on the Richmond Greenway, and so it goes without saying that they are all invited to the unveiling of the first design concepts Sunday.
The free event will take place from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at S. 6th and S. 16th streets at Ohio Avenue along the Greenway. First concept designs will be displayed at tents along the Greenway.
“The whole community is invited to provide their feedback on what they think of the designs,” according to a Friends of the Richmond Greenway (FORG) statement.
The event will also feature live music, food, and activities for children.
Unity Park will be built between 4th and 8th streets and Marina Way to 20th. In March 2012, FORG — group of 17 organizations and community groups with the mission of making the three-mile former railway corridor a safe public space — helped the city win a $5 million grant to build the park along sections of the vastly improving pedestrian/bicycle pathway.
Earlier this year on Martin Luther King Jr Day, community members who volunteered to help garden on the Greenway were also tasked with providing input on how Unity Park will look. Hundreds of community members provided input and meetings with key stakeholders were held over eight straight days to assist in the design development.
According to FORG, the first park designs incorporate basic elements including community gardens, a community plaza, playground, arts and amenities and upgrades to the bicycle and pedestrian trail.
The community-led design process has been a collaboration between FORG groups, the city, Vallier Design Associates and Restoration Design Group, officials said.
The Greenway was officially adopted as a public park of the City of Richmond in 2011. Local nonprofits and organizations “adopt-a-spot” on the Greenway, which they are responsible for maintaining.
