Saint James Community Church is set to host a musical tribute to influential Oakland gospel singer and pastor Walker Hawkins.

The whole community is invited to the July 10 event at Saint James, located at 4826 San Pablo Dam Road in El Sobrante. The celebration begins at 7 p.m.

Choirs or soloists who are interested in singing or praise dancing are encouraged to email Tanita Jones: @sjcc.change4change@Gmail.com.

Hawkins reportedly had a hand in the creation of 116 hit songs that made the Billboard Gospel Music charts and had much success while leading the Love Center Choir at the Love Center Church he launched in Oakland. He died of cancer in 2010 at age 61, and only two years before his death he performed in the East Room of the White House in honor of Black History Month.

David Bernstine is pastor of Saint James Community Church.
