While plans to enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists in the Iron Triangle are in the works, community organizations are being proactive about promoting active lifestyles among local families.
On Saturday, an annual cycling and wellness event at Lincoln Elementary in Richmond is expected to draw about 500 residents, organizers said.
The fifth annual Major Taylor Bike Fiesta, held by the Building Blocks for Kids Richmond Collaborative (BBK), runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the elementary school at 29 6th St. The event honors Marshall “Major” Taylor, the black cyclist who in the early 1900s battled racism while becoming the champion known as the “fastest man in the world.”
Bike Fiesta honors Major Taylor’s passion for the sport while doubling as a promotion of healthy and active lifestyles to Richmond families. The photo below, shared by the Richmond Police Department, is from last year’s event.
This year’s event will include a bike rodeo, bike racing, bike decoration, a bike repair shop, free bike gear, face-painting, Zumba and other games and activities with prizes. All adults at the event must be accompanied by a child.
The festival is held in collaboration with the City of Richmond, Contra Costa Department of Health Services, West Contra Costa Unified School District, Rock the Bike, Cycles of Change and other community partners.
At last year’s successful event, one aunt who brought her nephews and nieces admitted she and her young relatives don’t often ride bikes in the neighborhood because of “street chaos,” according to BBK.
“But, coming to this was great,” Latisha Kemp said. “I could ride my bike and play with them. We also got free helmets and pads so that was great for the kids. Things like this should happen all the time. We need it.”
