A cool video popped up on YouTube on Thursday showing the conceptual designs for an urban farm being planned at 323 Brookside Dr. in North Richmond.
The “Roots and Restoration Farm” project at the corner of Fred Jackson Way and Brookside began in summer 2012. The nonprofit Urban Tilth has been working to build the park along with County Supervisor John Gioia’s office.
The mission of the park, according to Urban Tilth, is to create a space where neighborhood residents can deeply engage with nature. It will include North Richmond’s only fresh fruit and vegetable produce market stand, learning gardens, an outdoor community kitchen, an earthwork amphitheater, outdoor garden and creek classrooms, petting zoo and egg farm, among other amenities and programs. Last year, the county’s Board of Supervisors amended the general plan to allow urban agriculture in North Richmond. Designs and an environmental review on the farm project are scheduled to happen this year, with construction set to begin next year.
