Richmond R&B singer Garice Tate building steam with first EP

Although R&B singer Garice Tate has lived all over the U.S. and in Germany with his military family, he says growing up in Richmond and attending local schools has provided more than enough inspiration and material for his budding music career.

The soulful 33-year-old crooner, who attended local schools including Stege Elementary, Helms Middle School and Kennedy High, is building upon his first EP, “Game Through Harmony,” which is available in multiple online stores and at “most of our local smoke shops,” Tate says.

The unsigned artist is planning to unveil new singles in the coming months ahead of the release of his next album, which is expected Feb. 14 of next year.

Tate’s father served in the Army, which sent his family to Germany, Florida, Virginia and Southern California. But he spent the most of his childhood in Richmond, where he fondly remembers listening to his uncle, Maurice Tate, sing old Blackstreet songs.

“I always loved music since a young boy listening to the likes of Michael Jackson, Prince, Bruce Springsten and many more,” he said.

He first started to know he could sing while rehearsing for his sixth-grade graduation.

“A lot of my songs relate to the things I went through growing up, the lifestyle,” he said.

Tate calls Richmond’s music scene filled with untapped potential.

“I feel that if a lot of artists can really get together and form a strong unit, we can make some serious noise independently and mainstream,” Tate said.

He’s worked with fleet of Richmond talent. They include “Flawless, Ralph Sleeze, Nardy Crash, Hollywood, Laz tha boy, Pooh Hefner, Young Smacka (R.I.P.) and Kaliente,” he said.

“Too many to name,” he said.
