The suspect arrested for allegedly fatally shooting 24-year-old Robert Fitch in Richmond on Monday has been formally charged with the killing, police said.

The case was presented Wednesday to the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office, which subsequently charged 54-year-old Byron Fairbanks with murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent felony and multiple enhancements, Richmond police spokesperson Nicole Abetkov said. His bail was set at $2.14 million and he remains in custody at Martinez Detention Facility.

The shooting occurred in the 2600 block of McBryde Avenue about 3:30 p.m. Fitch, a Richmond resident, was found suffering from a gunshot wound in front of a home. He later died from his injuries.

Police located Fairbanks only a few blocks away after receiving descriptions from witnesses. He was brought to police headquarters for follow-up interviews and was subsequently arrested.

A motive in the case is not yet known.
