The victim of a fatal hit-and-run crash on Interstate Highway 80 in Richmond on Friday night was identified by the Contra Costa County coroner’s office Monday as Malhar Singh, 65, of Hercules.

Singh was driving a Toyota Tacoma in the westbound lanes west of Solano Avenue when the collision occurred about 9:50 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. He died after being transported by medical helicopter to an area hospital.

The other vehicle involved the crash, believed to have been a 2013 Nissan Altima, was found abandoned a few miles from the crash scene on city streets. The Nissan had been reported stolen by 20-year-old San Pablo resident Jesus Sarabia, but an investigation led police to determine Sarabia was lying and had been driving the vehicle at the time of the collision.

He was arrested charges including hit-and-run, vehicular manslaughter, filing a false police report and providing false information to officers.

The incident remains under investigation. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact Oakland CHP Office at 510-450-3821 or the CHP’s tip line at 1-800-TELL-CHP.
