Authorities searched high and low for a suspected thief in East Richmond Heights Thursday afternoon after a sheriff’s deputy interrupted a home burglary.
We were tipped off to the incident from a resident in the neighborhood who also provided the photo in this story. About 12:50 p.m., Contra Costa County sheriff’s deputies received a call from a citizen about two suspects who were seen breaking into a home on Arlington Boulevard near Zinn Street, said Lt. D.J. Watt, who was one of the deputies to respond to the scene.
The first sheriff’s deputy to arrive at the home encountered the suspects and was holding them at gunpoint, Watt said. As the suspects were being escorted from the home, one of the suspects resisted arrest and a struggle ensued with the deputy. During the struggle, the second suspect fled, Watt said.
The suspect who initially resisted arrest was successfully taken into custody. The second suspect’s escape prompted a significant search response that involved assistance from an El Cerrito police K9 unit and East Bay Regional Park District helicopter.
While authorities were unable to locate the second suspect, Watt said the neighborhood was thoroughly searched and that the suspect no longer posed a threat to neighbors.
The neighbor who tipped us off to this incident reported seeing what appeared to be law enforcement officials park vehicles in the middle of the street, jump out guns drawn and run down the street. The neighbor also saw the suspect who was taken into custody and described him as an “animated/angry looking man in his late 20s or early 30s.” An ambulance at the scene gave him medical attention.
He was arrested on suspicion of residential burglary, possession of a stolen vehicle, a probation violation and may possibly face a conspiracy charge, Watt said. His identity was not being released due to the active investigation.
As of 3 p.m., police activity had mostly subsided aside from one remaining sheriff’s vehicle.
