A grand opening ceremony for the Ferry Point Loop trail in Richmond — a section of the planned 500-mile San Francisco Bay Trail — will take place Sunday.

The trail, a 3.6-mile loop that encircles the Miller/Knox lagoon and park just south of downtown Point Richmond (see map above of pathway alongside Dornan Drive), was completed after more than 15 years and a dozen construction projects, according to the Trails for Richmond Action Committee.

To commemorate the feat, a ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at Train Master’s Building Plaza at Gerrard Boulevard and Richmond Avenue in Point Richmond, across the street from the Richmond Municipal Natatorium aka the Plunge.

The event will be emceed by Richmond Mayor Tom Butt. Speakers include Sen. Loni Hancock, Contra Costa County Supervisor John Gioia and East  Bay Regional Park District Board President Whitney Dotson.

Along with learning what it took to get the Ferry Point Loop completed, attendees will hear about plans to extend the Bay Trail to Point Molate, Point Pinole Regional Shoreline and the Hilltop District, organizers said.

Those planning to attend should RSVP at tracbaytrail@earthlink.net.
