The grand opening of an authentic Ethiopian restaurant in El Cerrito is set for Friday and is expected to be attended by Contra Costa County Supervisor John Gioia.
“Taste of Ethiopia” at 11740 San Pablo Ave. is the brainchild of owner Tsege Tamene, whose culinary dream was fostered through Kitchen@812, the nonprofit that helps budding “food-preneurs” launch small businesses.
The eatery opened in February and has thus far received positive reviews online. A frequent Yelp reviewer of local businesses praised the food as fresh and tasty.
“Pretty decoration too, it should be called Little Ethiopia because you feel like you are in Ethiopia when you walk inside,” according to the review.
Tamene is originally from Ethiopia and wants to share traditional Ethiopian cuisine with her community, which was described by Kitchen@812 as boasting a blend of spices with no artificial flavors. There are healthy options for both vegetarians and meat eaters alike, the nonprofit adds.
The grand opening runs from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and will include menu tastings, live Ethiopian jazz and other cultural offerings.
“It’s great to have Taste of Ethiopia join the family of El Cerrito businesses and add to the growing diversity of our community. It’s important that we support our locally owned small businesses,” Gioia said in the statement.
