The nonprofit For Richmond announced this week it has partnered with BART to offer internships this summer for students who live in Richmond and are enrolled at a West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD) school or Contra Costa College.
Students can apply for the For Richmond Summer Internship Program by filling out an online application here.
Between eight and 12 internships will be available. Interns will work 20-hours per week from June 22 through Aug. 14. They will be provided opportunities to support BART’s operations in departments including public affairs and communications, engineering, transportation and civil rights, according to For Richmond.
BART will provide interns on-site career development courses on programs such as Microsoft PowerPoint, and students will also tour the Operations Control Center and go on a field day at the station, according to For Richmond.
“We are excited to team up with BART on this innovative program, which is designed to give students real-world work experience while they explore a variety of professional areas,” For Richmond Executive Director Kyra Worthy said in a statement. “We want to expose youth to viable career paths with the hopes of igniting their interest.”
De’Markus Williams, the transit agency’s chief intern of external affairs, started his student internship with BART one year ago and credits the experience with cultivating his interest in graphic design.
“I’ve been able to learn professional skills, which I can take with me wherever I go,” Williams said.
