Jesus Sarabia, 20, of San Pablo has been arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter charges in connection with a deadly crash on Interstate 80 in Richmond on Friday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at 9:52 p.m. in the westbound lanes just west of Solano Avenue, CHP said.
When officers arrived, they found a crashed Toyota Tacoma but the other vehicle involved had fled.
The Toyota’s driver, whose identity was not immediately available, died after being transported by medical helicopter to an area hospital, according to CHP.
The other vehicle, a 2013 Nissan Altima, was eventually located abandoned a few miles from the crash scene on city streets. Further investigation led officers to Sarabia’s home, where they met with Sarabia and determined he was the driver of the Nissan.
Sarabia “falsely reported the Nissan as stolen after the collision,” CHP said.
He was arrested on a slew of charges including filing a false police report and providing false information to officers.
The incident remains under investigation. Anyone who witnessed the crash are asked to contact Oakland CHP Office at 510-450-3821 or the CHP’s tip line at 1-800-TELL-CHP.
