Salesian alum Mariya Moore is among 34 basketball stars in the nation to have been invited to try out for the 12-member USA Basketball Women’s U-19 team, which will compete in Russia in July, it was announced Wednesday.
Moore, who just finished up a stellar freshman year with the University of Louisville, helped the USA Basketball U-18 team last summer win gold in Colorado. She is one of six members from that team who have been invited to try out for the U-19 squad from May 14-17 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.
Players selected for the team will compete in the 2015 FIBA U19 World Championship from July 18-26 in Chekhov, Russia.
“Looking at the list of invited players, I believe the committee members are going to have their hands full because it’s filled with so much talent,” USA U19 head coach Dawn Staley said in a statement.
In high school, Moore led Salesian to the championship game for the state’s highest division for the first time in school history. In 137 games with the Pride, she amassed 2,396 points, 1,110 rebounds, 878 assists, 535 steals, and 81 blocked shots. She also connected on 47-percent of her shots from the field and 80-percent from the line.
